Geneva, 9 Mar (Notimex). – The president of the Research Committee of the United Nations (UN), Philippe Kirsch, said today that serious human rights violations such as torture, arbitrary detentions and enforced disappearances continue in Libya.
At a news conference in Geneva, the Canadian judge recommended the Human Rights Council (HRC) to assist the interim government of Libya in its their efforts to stop and punish abuses of individual rights in that country.
A report on the situation in Libya, presented by Kirch to the HRC says that both forces, those loyal to deposed Muammar Gaddafi as well as opposition forces, “committed war crimes.”
The report, however, specifies that only Gaddafi’s army committed crimes against humanity and perpetrated murders, disappearances and torture “widespread and systematic against the civilian population.”
On the other hand, Kirsch recommended to further investigate Gaddafi’s death, since evidence has allowed them to reconstructed the events leading to his death.
However, he was denied the autopsy report, requested several times, and therefore the exact circumstances of his death are not clear.
The expert called to further investigate the air strikes by the Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), which killed at least 60 civilians and wounded about 55 more.
Kirsch announced that the head of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay has already in her hands the sealed envelope with the names of those who committed crimes against humanity and war crimes during the armed conflict in Libya.
“The Libyan authorities can break with the legacy of Gaddafi applying the law and investigating all violations, whoever the perpetrators” concluded the report presented in Geneva.
